b. 1982 Bogotá, Colombia
Born and raised in Bogotá, Jimena has a background in architecture and practiced in New York and Boston. In 2020, soon after her son was born, she relocated to Maine and shifted her interests to sculpture. As she lived in isolation as a new mother, her artwork emerged from anxieties and fantasies while she embraced motherhood in a foreign landscape.
Jimena uses a mix of papier-mâché clay, cloth and wire to depict a dreamlike collage of quotidian objects, adorned, exaggerated and open-ended. Her art practice is a playful, and sometimes whimsical, response to her internal dialogues around themes of loneliness, womanhood and the idea of home.
